The long-awaited Astromeritis-Evrychou motorway project, a key initiative connecting the Troodos region with Nicosia, is steadily advancing toward completion, according to Cyprus's Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, Alexis Vafeadis. The project, valued at €90 million, is set to significantly enhance accessibility for residents in remote areas.

During a site visit on Tuesday, Minister Vafeadis expressed satisfaction with the progress, affirming the project remains on schedule for completion in October 2025. He highlighted the motorway’s importance in improving connectivity, enabling quicker access to workplaces, schools, and healthcare facilities for residents in the Solea and Marathasa areas. Accompanying the Minister on his visit were Parliamentary Transport Committee Chairman Marinos Mousiuttas and officials from the Public Works Department, reinforcing the project’s significance.

The project, which started in October 2022, faced delays due to a concrete strike. However, the contractors and Public Works Department have made strides to recover lost time. Vafeadis praised the organized and efficient approach of the teams involved, noting substantial progress in constructing the valley bridge and completing foundational infrastructure.

"The contractors are working in a coordinated manner, and the project is moving forward on schedule," he said, emphasizing optimism about meeting the completion target. The motorway’s construction has already made an impression, with Vafeadis calling the project "very impressive."

The Minister revealed that funding for the next phase of the motorway project has been included in the government’s budgets for the next three years, with full completion expected between 2028 and 2029. This extension is part of the government’s commitment to improving connectivity between rural and urban areas, a central pillar of its development strategy.

The Astromeritis-Evrychou motorway is a cornerstone of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities. Once completed, it is expected to revitalize the local economy, enhance quality of life, and bridge the gap between urban and remote areas. The project underscores the government's focus on regional development and infrastructure upgrades.
