Limassol’s biggest wine lover has arrived early. Vrakas, the giant figure of a Cypriot winegrower, is back in his familiar spot at the Public Garden, which can mean only one thing: the Wine Festival is nearly here.
The 65th festival runs from September 26 to October 4, and the garden is already changing shape. Crews have begun putting up the pavilions, while the Ariones choir supplied a preview of the party with songs about wine as Vrakas was placed on Monday morning.
Mayor Yiannis Armeftis said preparations are in their final stretch and invited residents and visitors to come along. He is hoping this year’s celebration will top the last one, though Limassol’s regular festivalgoers may want to judge that over a glass or two.
For anyone planning a visit, the municipality says the gates will be open from 7 p.m. to midnight each night. Wine tastings are scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with live music, food and other events also on the program.
There are still stalls to finish and plenty of work to do before opening night. But with Vrakas standing guard again, Limassol has entered that familiar time of year when a walk through the garden may turn into a long evening with friends.
