Wednesday stays hot as Cyprus braces for a proper weather switch-up

Temperatures hit 36°C inland today, but clouds, showers and the odd thunderstorm are starting to gatecrash summer.

Newsroom

We’ve made it to Wednesday, and Cyprus is starting to look like it might finally be ready to loosen its grip on summer. Not completely, of course. This is Cyprus. We’re still expecting 36°C inland today, so nobody is putting the air conditioner out of work just yet. But there is a weather disturbance on the way from Thursday, and it looks like the island is about to get a little more dramatic. Clouds are gathering. The mountains are plotting. Autumn is watching from a distance.

Today will start off mainly clear, but clouds developing locally after midday are expected to bring isolated showers, with an isolated thunderstorm also possible, particularly in the mountains. Winds will begin variable and light before gradually becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate and locally moderate. The sea will be slightly rough, while temperatures will climb to around 36°C inland, 31°C on the west and southwest coasts, 33°C on the remaining coasts and 28°C in the higher mountains. So, yes, it is still hot. But the weather is clearly starting to experiment.

Tonight, skies will remain mainly clear, although some locally increased mid-level cloud will appear later. Winds will be mainly katabatic and light, while the sea will become calm to slightly rough.

Thursday brings the arrival of the expected weather disturbance, with cloud gradually increasing across the island. By the afternoon, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in places, particularly in the mountains and inland. And because the weather apparently wants to make a statement, hail is possible during a thunderstorm. Things could get even livelier in the evening, when occasional local showers are expected to develop gradually, with isolated thunderstorms mainly along the coast. There may also be dust suspended in the atmosphere.

Friday will keep the unsettled mood going, with temporarily mainly cloudy conditions, local showers and isolated thunderstorms initially.

Then on Saturday, isolated afternoon showers are expected, particularly in the mountains and inland.

And now for the part many of us have been waiting for...Temperatures will gradually and noticeably fall through Friday, dropping below the average climatic values for this time of year. A small rise is expected on Saturday, but by then the island should be feeling considerably less like an oven and a little more like a place that has remembered what September is supposed to do.

So summer isn't quite ready to surrender yet, but it is certainly starting to lose its confidence. And after months of temperatures behaving like they have something to prove, a little cloud, rain and thunder sounds rather refreshing.
