Authorities at the Agios Dometios checkpoint intercepted an elderly driver transporting a significant quantity of fuel during routine inspections on March 19, 2026.
Customs officers discovered ten 20-liter plastic containers in the rear storage area of the vehicle. Together, they held approximately 200 liters of fuel,160 liters of diesel and 40 liters of petrol, believed to have been brought from the northern part of the island.
The 80-year-old driver was initially taken into custody on the spot for offenses related to the illegal transport of fuel. Officials also seized both the containers and the vehicle used to carry them.
He was later released after agreeing to settle the case out of court by paying a €1,000 fine.
