People receiving treatment for opioid dependence in Cyprus will have access to a new long-acting form of buprenorphine, the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) announced on Tuesday.
The injectable treatment is being introduced through SHSO’s Opioid Agonist Treatment Services, also known as Substitution Units, which provide treatment for people with opioid dependence.
Unlike conventional oral medication, which requires patients to attend treatment services and take medication every day, the new formulation can be administered once a week or once a month. The injection is given by a specialised mental health nurse and is designed to keep medication levels in the body more stable over time.
According to SHSO, the new option is expected to make it easier for patients to remain consistent with their treatment while reducing the need for daily visits to treatment units.
The organisation said the reduced frequency of appointments can also help patients manage work and social commitments and support their return to everyday life.
SHSO said the addition of long-acting injectable buprenorphine forms part of its efforts to modernise mental health and addiction treatment services, with treatment approaches based on scientific evidence and focused on patient dignity and public health.
