A major expansion of the sewerage system in western Limassol is getting underway, with construction costs expected to exceed €120 million and infrastructure planned to cover around 33 square kilometres.
The project, being developed by the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (EOA), will extend sewerage services across the Kouris area and is expected to benefit approximately 42,000 households.
The first steps in planning the project have already begun. Last week, EOA officials held an initial meeting with the consortium appointed to provide consultancy services for the development.
The consultants will prepare a Master Plan and Feasibility Study, which will determine how the new sewerage system will be designed and developed. Their work will also include environmental assessments, network design and later supervision of construction contracts.
220 kilometres of new infrastructure
The planned system will include approximately 220 kilometres of sewerage pipelines, along with several pumping stations.
The project also calls for the construction of a third wastewater biological treatment and recycled water production plant.
The EOA has included €2 million in its 2027 budget for the purchase of land intended for the new facility. The allocation forms part of the organisation's financial planning through 2028, although the land acquisition process has not yet been completed.
The new infrastructure will cover the municipal districts of Episkopi, Ypsonas, Trachoni, Asomatos, Akrotiri, Kolossi and Erimi within the Municipality of Kouris, as well as Tserkez Tsiflik in the Municipality of Limassol.
British Bases add to project complexity
Part of the planned infrastructure, including the location proposed for the new treatment plant, falls within an area under the jurisdiction of the British Bases.
The EOA has identified this as an additional factor that will need to be addressed as the project progresses.
The development is also linked to Cyprus' obligations under European Directive 91/271/EEC, which sets requirements for the treatment of urban wastewater.
Consultancy contract worth €4.5 million
The consultancy agreement for the project is valued at €4.5 million.
Beyond the initial planning work, the consultants will assess tenders submitted for the construction phase, oversee the relevant contracts and supervise the works once construction begins.
The total value of the construction contracts is currently estimated at more than €120 million.
The completion of the Master Plan and Feasibility Study will establish the project's next stages and provide the framework for developing the new sewerage network across western Limassol.
