A sunny Monday with a few clouds up its sleeve

Mostly clear skies and 35°C inland are on the cards, with a few afternoon showers or thunderstorms over the mountains and inland.

Well, look at that. Monday has rolled around again. Just when we were getting comfortable with the weekend, the alarm clock has decided it has unfinished business with us. But at least Cyprus is offering a fairly pleasant start to the week, with mostly clear skies, temperatures around 35°C inland, and just enough afternoon cloud to keep things interesting.

A weak area of low pressure is affecting the region, and while summer is still hanging around, the weather is beginning to behave a little more like September should. Sunshine first, mountain showers later. Because who doesn't like a little suspense.

Today will be mainly clear, although cloud will increase temporarily at times. From around midday onwards, developing clouds are expected to bring isolated showers or a thunderstorm, mainly in the mountains and inland. So if you're heading into the hills later, the sky may have a few thoughts of its own.

Winds will begin variable and light before gradually becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate. Along the southern coasts, they may temporarily become strong.

The sea will generally be calm to slightly rough, although it may become slightly rough at times in the southwest during the afternoon.

And the temperatures? Still doing their best to remind us that summer hasn't completely packed its bags. Expect around 35°C inland, 31°C on the coasts and 21°C in the highest mountains. So yes, the air conditioner is still very much part of the Monday survival plan.

Tonight, things quieten down. The weather will remain mainly clear, although increased low cloud will appear at times, particularly along the coasts.

Then, during the early morning hours, there is a chance of patches of thin mist or fog, mainly in the east and inland. Winds will gradually become katabatic and light, while the sea will remain generally calm to slightly rough. In other words, the weather is getting ready for its early-morning mysterious fog era.

Tuesday will be mainly clear with temporarily increased cloud, with isolated showers possible after midday, mainly in the mountains.

Then on Wednesday and Thursday, afternoon cloud will once again have the potential to bring isolated showers or thunderstorms, particularly in the mountains, inland and eastern areas. As for the temperatures, don't expect any dramatic plot twists just yet. They are not expected to change significantly through Thursday and should remain close to the seasonal average.

So, Monday may have dragged us back to reality, but at least the weather isn't making things too difficult. A bit of sunshine, a mountain shower or two, perhaps some fog if you're awake early enough, and temperatures that are finally behaving themselves.

Could be worse. It could be Monday and raining.
