Group calls on bicommunal committees to address issue in occupied north

The Animal Party Cyprus is urging bicommunal technical committees to take action to protect donkeys in the Karpasia Peninsula, citing growing concerns over their safety and welfare in the island’s occupied north.

In a statement marking World Donkey Day on May 8, the party called on Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives to cooperate on a comprehensive solution that would benefit both communities and safeguard the animals.

“Donkeys have long been an integral part of Cyprus’s cultural heritage,” the group said. “We must not forget that they have served humanity humbly for thousands of years.”

The party also referenced what it described as the “brutal slaughter” of at least 15 donkeys in Karpasia in recent years, adding that more than 3,000 donkeys still roam the area and require immediate protection and support.
