Authorities are cracking down on a company responsible for illegally dumping dead animals in Meniko, with fines and possible legal action on the way, the Director of Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, confirmed on Friday.

The discovery of numerous piglet carcasses, some left exposed and others partially buried, sparked an immediate investigation by Veterinary Services and the Department of Environment. According to Pipis, the way the carcasses were buried suggests an attempt to cover up the act.

The company, which has a government contract to handle animal by-products, has now been ordered to remove the carcasses and properly dispose of them in accordance with EU regulations. Officials believe the dumping took place within the last 20 days, ruling out disease as a cause.

Pipis emphasized that administrative fines will be imposed, and the state will recover the cost of the cleanup from the company. Legal proceedings may also follow, depending on the final decision by the authorities.
