Former Democratic Rally leader Averof Neofytou has officially announced his candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, confirming a political move he had strongly signaled in recent weeks.
Neofytou placed the continued deadlock in the Cyprus problem at the heart of his campaign, arguing that the latest high-level meetings in New York produced no agreement and that time is working against reunification.
“The dead ends remain. The black clouds over the country are growing thicker,” he said, accusing the country’s leadership of choosing the familiar path of passivity and gradually accepting the status quo.
He called for what he described as a “national awakening” aimed at ending the occupation and reunifying the island, while also promising to address the country’s broader problems, create opportunities for young people, and build a fairer society.
“I declare my presence and submit my candidacy for the 2028 presidential election,” Neofytou said. “Above all, for a reunited homeland.”
His early declaration places him in the race more than a year before the election campaign would normally begin—and is likely to increase pressure on DISY to clarify its own plans.
