Back to reality: Sunshine, clouds, and wonderful morning traffic

As the kids head back to school and adults return to work, Cyprus enjoys mild weather with clear skies and a touch of festive cheer for Russian Christmas - с Рождеством!

Ah, January 7th—a bittersweet day! The holidays have packed up their tinsel, kids are back to school (thank goodness, right?), and adults are staring down their inboxes. But let’s not forget, it’s Christmas Day for our Russian friends! As they often say with a smile, “We like to be different!”  So, ''с Рождеством!''

Now, let’s talk weather. Today, weak high pressure is doing its thing over Cyprus, offering us mostly clear skies. However, expect some clouds to pop up later, particularly over the mountains and western areas. Winds will start off from the northeast to southeast but will shift to the southwest to northwest in the afternoon, staying gentle at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea is calm to slightly choppy—perfect for daydreaming about summer swims as you sip your coffee.

Temperatures will hit a comfortable 19°C inland and along the southeast and east coasts, with 20°C gracing the rest of the coastlines. Up in the higher mountains, though, it’s a nippy 9°C, so bundle up if you’re heading to Troodos to check out the snow (18 cm at the peaks, for those keeping score).

Tonight, we’ll see some high clouds drifting in, with temperatures dipping to 6°C inland, 10°C along the coast, and a frosty 3°C in the mountains—where Jack Frost might leave his signature sparkle.

Looking ahead, Wednesday and Thursday will feature a mix of high clouds, with some low clouds sneaking in on Wednesday. By Friday, the sun should take center stage, but watch out for a few isolated showers in the mountains and along the coast as the day winds down.

Temperatures will stay unseasonably warm, reminding us that even in January, Cyprus likes to keep things mild.

So, as we settle back into reality, let’s take a moment to appreciate the little joys—like a quiet house now that school is back in session. Stay warm, and don’t forget to sneak a leftover piece of melomakarona or vasilopita. You’ve earned it!
