Brace yourself for another scorcher, yet again

The weather report for those oblivious to the scorching heat on the island

Newsroom

For those who haven’t been paying attention (or are blissfully unaware), it’s going to be HOT in Cyprus today. Shocking, right?  Yes, people who complained about the same weather report day after day, our bad.

The sky will be mostly clear, but don’t get too excited—there might be a few clouds over the west coast trying to put on a show. And for a real treat, the mountains might surprise us with a sprinkle of isolated showers this afternoon. Don’t hold your breath, though.

Winds will be doing their usual thing, starting off light from the southwest to northwest, and picking up speed as the day goes on. By afternoon, they’ll be flexing their muscles, especially on the southeastern coast, reaching a strong 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. The sea will start off slightly choppy, working its way up to just a little rough—because apparently, even the sea likes to keep things interesting.

Temperatures will be toasty, with the mercury soaring to a delightful 41 degrees inland. The coasts won’t be much cooler, ranging from 33 to 36 degrees, while the mountains will offer a “refreshing” 31 degrees. In other words, it’s a day for staying inside or finding the nearest air conditioner.

Oh, and in case you needed more confirmation that it’s going to be sweltering, the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for extreme temperatures. This sun-blazing advisory is in effect from 12:00 to 16:00, just in time to remind you that yes, it’s still really, really hot.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly clear, with a few clouds lurking along the coast. Winds will settle down to a gentle 3 Beaufort, and the sea will calm down a bit—except in the west, where it’ll stubbornly stay a little choppy. Temperatures will dip to a balmy 24 degrees inland and along the coast, and a cool 22 degrees in the mountains.

Looking ahead to the weekend and Monday, expect more of the same. The skies will stay mostly clear with a few clouds popping up on Saturday afternoon just to keep us guessing. Temperatures will hover around the same scorching levels through Sunday, with a slight, almost imperceptible drop on Monday—because apparently, that’s our version of relief. But don’t get too excited; they’ll still be above average.

So, there you have it, folks. Another day in paradise... if your idea of paradise involves being roasted to perfection. Stay cool out there!
