Bus driver seriously injured in passenger attack

Union warns of ongoing risks to drivers and passengers from lack of protective measures.

A bus driver remains hospitalized with serious injuries after being assaulted by a passenger last Sunday. Medical staff are expected to carry out an MRI scan to better evaluate his condition.

The incident has reignited concerns about safety on public transport, particularly in Nicosia, where both the driver and passengers were put at risk during the attack, which occurred while the bus was in motion.

The Transport Federation of SEK issued a statement expressing concern over what it describes as ongoing and unresolved safety issues affecting bus drivers and commuters alike. The union stressed that such incidents display a failure to adequately protect workers, noting that employees continue to face unprovoked violence while performing their duties.

According to SEK, it has repeatedly raised these concerns with transport companies, the Ministry of Transport, the Parliamentary Transport Committee, and other relevant bodies. Among its proposals is the installation of protective driver enclosures, a measure already implemented in several countries. The union argues that such safeguards could have significantly reduced the danger in this case.

The organization warned that repeated incidents of this nature increase the risk of more serious outcomes and emphasized the need for preventative action rather than reactive measures after a tragedy occurs.

SEK is now urging authorities and stakeholders to convene urgently and introduce effective steps to improve safety for both drivers and passengers across urban and intercity transport systems.
