Civil Defence has confirmed that 18 residents displaced by the collapse of a residential building in Germasogeia were immediately relocated to hotel accommodation arranged by the State, pushing back on claims that government support had been discontinued.
According to officials, all affected individuals were initially housed in a hotel, where meals and essential supplies have been provided in coordination with the Cyprus Red Cross. Authorities insist that assistance has remained in place since the moment of the incident.
At present, nine people, including a tourist, continue to stay at the hotel with expenses covered by the State. The remaining nine individuals left the accommodation on their own initiative without informing Civil Defence.
However, the Municipality of Amathounta has also stepped in, announcing that it will take over the accommodation of survivors from Easter Tuesday through Sunday. Local authorities said that those affected lost not only their homes but also personal belongings and money.
The municipality stated it acted immediately to address the situation, while expressing hope that the State will fully assume its responsibilities and provide longer-term solutions.
Meanwhile, Civil Defence maintains that the nine individuals still at the hotel will continue to be accommodated at state expense until permanent housing is secured through the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare.
