Bus driver tests positive for drugs before school trip

Police and school officials quickly act to ensure students’ safety after driver fails drug test just before field trip.

In a shocking turn of events on Thursday morning, a bus driver in Paphos was found to be under the influence of drugs just moments before he was scheduled to transport students on a field trip.

The incident unfolded when members of the police, in coordination with the Paphos District High School administration, arrived at the school to inspect the readiness of six buses that were to be used for the trip. The routine check was part of the standard procedure to ensure safety before students set off.

However, things took an unexpected twist when one of the six drivers tested positive for drugs in a preliminary roadside test. Authorities promptly took samples from the driver for a more detailed laboratory analysis to confirm whether he had indeed been driving under the influence of narcotics.

Given the situation, the school quickly called in another driver to safely transport the students on their trip, ensuring that the field trip could go ahead without further delay.

The fortunate outcome of this incident raises broader concerns about student safety, not just regarding the capability of bus drivers but also the condition of the buses. This comes after a similar scare two years ago, when a bus carrying students on a field trip to Larnaca lost a tire on the highway. Both the police and school administration have stressed that ensuring safety is their top priority, and stricter measures will be implemented to prevent any future incidents.
