Police in Nicosia are investigating the theft of a car that was left parked with the keys in the ignition, while authorities in Larnaca are probing a separate case involving the theft of cash and personal items from a parked vehicle.

According to a report filed with the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a woman told police that her vehicle, valued at €15,000, was stolen around 10:40 p.m. Sunday. The car had been parked outside a kiosk in the Engomi area, and the keys were left in the ignition at the time of the theft.

In Larnaca, a man reported the theft of €4,100 in cash from his car while it was parked outside a restaurant in the Oroklini area sometime between 9 p.m. and midnight on Sunday, according to a report filed with the Oroklini Police Station.

The cash was stored in a shoulder bag hidden under the driver’s seat, which also contained several bank cheques. A handbag left on the back seat was also taken. Police said the perpetrators broke into the vehicle by smashing the glass on both the driver’s side and a passenger door.

In response to the incidents, police are urging the public not to leave money or valuables inside vehicles, even when locked. They also advise drivers to remove keys, close windows fully, and lock their vehicles every time they park, even for brief stops.

Authorities noted that failure to take basic security precautions, including properly securing keys and vehicles, may be considered an offense, especially in cases where negligence leads to unauthorized use of a vehicle.
