We’re fashionably late with the weather today. Blame it on the holiday spirit. In Cyprus, it’s the Monday after Pentecost, which in the Orthodox calendar means we’re celebrating the Holy Spirit. May we all be filled with divine wisdom... or at least enough sense to stay in the shade. If you’re Catholic, today honors the Virgin Mary. And if you’re not religious, you’re still in luck: welcome to Kataklysmos, Cyprus’s own Feast of the Flood. Whether you interpret that biblically or as an excuse to throw water at your neighbors and eat loukoumades by the beach, we support your holiday enthusiasm.
Now, on to the weather. A warm air mass is currently lounging over the island like it owns the place. This morning began with some low cloud and fog, classic June moodiness, but skies are clearing as the day progresses. Winds are starting off light from the sea and shifting to a more southwesterly to northwesterly flow later, staying light to moderate, and the sea will be just rough enough to remind you it's still awake. Inland temperatures are climbing to a sizzling 38°C, while coastal areas and the mountains will be a more bearable 29°C. It's still summer, just slightly less aggressive.
Tonight, expect mostly clear skies again, but with more of that coastal fog creeping in as the night wears on. Winds will calm to a gentle whisper and temperatures across the board, whether you're inland, beachside, or up in the hills, will cool to around 19°C.
Looking ahead to Tuesday through Thursday, the weather will stay mostly clear with some low cloud cover popping up now and then, especially in the evenings and early mornings along the coast. No real change in temperature is expected, so we’ll continue cruising above the seasonal average, just in case anyone had hopes of a cool breeze. Spoiler: not this week.
In the meantime, enjoy the holiday, whichever version you're celebrating, and if you're near water, don’t be afraid to splash someone in the name of tradition.
