Cyprus collected five medals on Monday at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, including gold for hammer thrower Iosif Kesidis and long jumper Filippa Fotopoulou.
Kesidis secured the men’s hammer throw title with a 77.99-metre effort on his third attempt. Greece’s Christos Frantzeskakis finished second with 77.59m, while Croatia’s Matija Greguric took bronze.
The Cypriot recorded throws of 75.93m, 77.99m, 74.88m, 75.47m and 75.28m, alongside one foul.
His victory marked Cyprus’ fourth gold medal at the Games and the country’s first athletics gold in Taranto.
Fotopoulou later added another athletics title in the women’s long jump. Her opening effort of 6.59m proved sufficient for first place, with none of her rivals able to surpass the mark in the remaining rounds.
The two gold medals came alongside silver medals for Milan Trajkovic and Elena Kulichenko.
Trajkovic finished second in the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.25 seconds, matching the Cypriot national record he set at the 2017 London Diamond League. France’s Erwann Cinna won the race in 13.22 seconds.
The result gave Trajkovic his second consecutive Mediterranean Games silver medal, following his second-place finish in Oran in 2022.
Kulichenko cleared 1.92m in the women’s high jump on her third attempt, setting a new season’s best. She subsequently tried 1.94m and 1.96m but could not clear either height. Montenegro’s Marija Vukovic won gold at 1.94m.
The latest results lifted Cyprus’ medal tally to 13, comprising five gold, five silver and three bronze medals, according to the figures provided by the Cyprus Olympic Committee delegation.
