Cyprus experienced an exceptionally wet August, with rainfall across the government-controlled areas reaching more than 10 times the monthly average, preliminary figures from the Department of Meteorology showed on Monday.
By Monday morning, average rainfall for August had reached 30 millimetres, compared with the long-term monthly average of 2.9 millimetres. More than three-quarters of the month's total, or 22.5 millimetres, fell during the final three days.
Platania received the highest overall rainfall, recording 83.9 millimetres during the month. The area's normal August average is 12.8 millimetres.
Some areas recorded particularly dramatic departures from their usual August conditions. Frenaros received 27.3 millimetres of rain, compared with an average of just 0.1 millimetres, while Xylotymbou recorded 40 millimetres against a normal level of 0.2 millimetres.
At Larnaca Airport, 26.2 millimetres of rain was measured, compared with a typical August average of 0.6 millimetres. Gefyri Panagias recorded 43.4 millimetres, almost 30 times its usual monthly average of 1.5 millimetres.
Nearly every meteorological station operated by the department registered rainfall above normal levels for August. Pano Panagia was the only station where no rainfall was recorded, while Paphos Airport received 0.2 millimetres, matching its seasonal average.
The unusually wet month has also contributed to a strong overall rainfall performance during the current hydrological year.
From October 1, 2025, until the end of August 2026, Cyprus received cumulative rainfall of 608.3 millimetres, equivalent to 122 per cent of the normal amount for the same period. According to the preliminary data, every meteorological station across the island recorded cumulative rainfall exceeding its seasonal norm.
