Cyprus court lifts injunction, allows Pentakomo Harbor construction to resume

Court fast-tracks case as environmental concerns grow over one of Cyprus’s last natural coastlines.

The Administrative Court of Cyprus has lifted a temporary injunction that had nearly halted construction at Pentakomo harbor for almost two months, a move allowing work to continue until the final ruling is issued.

According to a Facebook post by Birdlife Cyprus, the court’s decision, announced last Friday, was based on procedural grounds following the contracting company’s successful request to join the case as an interested party. The court emphasized that the ruling did not address the substance of the environmental concerns surrounding the project.

BirdLife Cyprus, which has been actively opposing the harbor development along with Friends of the Earth Cyprus, welcomed the court’s decision to expedite the case. The hearing is now scheduled to conclude by the end of August, with a final ruling to follow, a notably fast timeline for the Administrative Court.

“This demonstrates that the case is being treated with high priority,” BirdLife Cyprus said, highlighting the ecological and societal importance of protecting one of Cyprus’s last natural coastal areas.

BirdLife Cyprus and environmental advocates remain committed to seeking the cancellation of the planning permit and preserving the habitat, which supports diverse wildlife including protected marine species.

The environmental groups plan to present extensive scientific evidence during the case, pointing to concerns previously overlooked during the harbor’s environmental assessment phase.

Public support for the legal challenge has been strong, with more than €10,000 raised through donations aimed at saving the coastline.
