Check your wallet: Old Cyprus ID cards expire Monday

Identity cards without an expiry date become invalid on Aug. 3, meaning holders will need to replace them with a newer version.

That old identity card sitting in your wallet may have lasted for years, but if it does not show an expiry date, its time is up.

Older Cyprus identity cards without an expiration date cease to be valid from Monday, Aug. 3.

The deadline affects holders of the older-style documents, who were instructed by the Civil Registry and Migration Department to replace them with newer cards.

Residents can check whether they are affected simply by looking at the front of their ID card. If there is no expiration date, the document falls under the replacement requirement.

For anyone who has put off changing it, the issue is more than cosmetic. An identity card is regularly needed for travel, banking, government services, and other everyday transactions where proof of identity is required.

The replacement deadline was announced several years ago to give holders time to switch to the newer format. But, as often happens with documents that sit quietly in a wallet, some people may only notice when they actually need to use one.

Anyone still carrying the older version should now arrange for a replacement and avoid relying on it as a valid identification document.
