Parents and teachers in Nicosia were shocked to learn that a man arrested on child porn charges was in fact a security guard at a local high school.
According to local media, a 28-year-old male suspect was detained following a complaint filed by a young male who was reportedly under the legal age.
The complainant was a high school student in Nicosia who had sent nude photos and videos of himself to what he thought was a woman’s Facebook account, which later turned out to be a fake social media handle operated by the male suspect.
Female students became suspicious of the security guard and looked through his phone, where they discovered multiple files pertinent to the case
The suspect, who works for a private security firm, is thought to have admitted to investigators he had acquired the nudes through solicitation. A Nicosia judge on Thursday ordered that he be remanded in custody for eight days.
Reports said parents were shocked and horrified over the arrest, especially after learning that the suspect admitted to investigators that he had acted similarly in four other cases also involving minors.
A local story that appeared Thursday night on Reporter said a number of female students at the high school in question became suspicious of the security guard and looked through his phone, where they discovered multiple files pertinent to the case.
A parents network of high schools said through a representative that they were prepared to meet with the education minister to examine together whether extra measures need to be put in place to avoid the hiring of unfit individuals as security guards.
