President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman will attend a festival in Pyla together on Saturday, October 17, following a meeting under United Nations auspices on Tuesday.
The two leaders met in the UN Protected Area in Nicosia in what the UN described as a positive atmosphere. They agreed to hold another meeting next week to continue their discussions.
According to a UN press statement issued on Tuesday, both leaders also expressed anticipation for the upcoming visit of Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus.
Their planned joint appearance at the Pyla festival will bring them together at a community event in the mixed village, which lies within the UN-controlled buffer zone.
The leaders also agreed to attend upcoming meetings of three bodies working on issues affecting the island’s communities: the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, the Technical Committee on Youth and the Steering Committee of the Civil Society Consultative Body.
The decisions follow Tuesday’s meeting, during which the two sides discussed their upcoming engagements and reaffirmed their intention to continue working together.
The UN has not provided further details about the agenda for next week’s meeting.
