A man who was arrested at a public beach for public masturbation and subsequently lost his job at police headquarters has been sentenced to two years behind bars.

According to local media, a man in his forties described as a police officer has been sentenced to two years in prison on indecent exposure charges following his arrest on a late Sunday afternoon at a Protaras beach in 2017.

Reports said the officer was arrested on Yianna Marie Beach on 27 August 2017 following complaints by angry parents, who said the man was masturbating in public where there were families with young children.

The man, who was quickly suspended following his arrest, had denied the accusations but the court rejected his version of events

Additional reports said the man had been accused of masturbating in front of a 10-year-old boy, while two other children who saw the act had gone back and told their parents.

Police were quickly called to the scene and asked the man to identify himself, later handcuffing their fellow officer on suspicion of carrying out an indecent act.

The man, who was quickly suspended by orders of the police chief following his arrest, had denied the accusations but the court rejected his version of events.

Following news of the cop’s arrest in 2017, local media also rehashed a similar story from previous years.

According to allegations, a law enforcement official had been seen frequenting news stands in Nicosia after work where he would browse through porn magazines while having his member exposed to public view.
