Corbyn claims Akrotiri Base used as transit hub for arms deliveries to Israel

British MP says Cyprus is becoming increasingly entangled in the Israel-Palestine war as key questions remain unanswered.

Cyprus is being drawn deeper into the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, according to British MP Jeremy Corbyn, who claims that the UK’s Sovereign Base Area at Akrotiri is being used as a stopover point for transferring weapons to Israel.

Corbyn made the remarks in a message addressed to the European Parliament’s Left Group, which is currently holding its “Study Days” in Cyprus. He argued that the situation raises serious unanswered questions about Cyprus’s role in the wider regional crisis.

In his statement, Corbyn called for stronger international support for Palestinians, urging recognition of their right to live freely and demanding an end to Israel’s occupation. He also described the situation in Palestine as a genocide and said that concrete solidarity must be shown with the Palestinian people.

Beyond the Middle East conflict, Corbyn used the opportunity to highlight broader political issues facing Europe. He pointed to the social damage caused by austerity policies and free-market reforms, warning that rising poverty and widening inequality have weakened welfare systems and contributed to the growing influence of far-right movements.

He also criticised what he described as the European Union’s shift toward a “war economy,” arguing that large increases in military spending, promoted under European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have benefited arms manufacturers, whose shares have risen amid ongoing wars.
