The body of a man found in the sea off Avdimou beach last month has now been identified, ending weeks of uncertainty around the case.

British Bases (BB) Police said the man is Vladislav Baumgertner, a 53-year-old Russian national who was living in Limassol. His identity was confirmed through DNA analysis.

Baumgartner’s body was recovered from the sea near Avdimou Beach on January 15, 2026. He had been reported missing eight days earlier, on January 7.

Authorities said the circumstances and cause of his death remain under investigation. The case is being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the British Police.

The man’s relatives have been informed, while investigators continue to follow standard procedures to determine what led to his death.

Recap

The case first emerged in mid-January, when BB Police recovered the body of an unidentified man from the sea near Avdimou Beach. At the time, no documents or personal items were found that could confirm his identity, leaving his death a mystery.

The discovery came during the same period as the death of a Russian embassy employee in Cyprus, adding to public attention around the case. DNA testing was later carried out, leading to the man’s identification this week.
