Criticism mounts over OELMEK President’s comment on Education Minister

Gender Equality Commissioner denounces statement as sexist.

A controversy erupted after Dimitris Taliadoros, head of OELMEK, made remarks on ANT1 that many viewers interpreted as sexist toward the Minister of Education.

His comments came during a discussion about the ongoing teachers’ work stoppage. While criticizing recent legislative changes, Taliadoros noted that “for the first time in 50 years, a woman has come forward to change the law,” a statement that quickly drew widespread criticism.

The reaction was strong enough to prompt an official response from the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou. She voiced her disapproval, stressing that public figures must avoid language that diminishes individuals based on gender, particularly during heated debates. Christodoulou emphasized that referring to the Minister’s gender in such a manner is inappropriate and contributes to a broader climate of disrespect.

The incident has added further tension to an already charged discussion surrounding the education sector and the legislative reforms underway.
