Team Cyprus had a blast at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with their athletes dazzling on the world stage. The Cypriot squad, led by Elena Koulichenko, Milan Trajkovic, and Olivia Fotopoulou, showed off their talents and made their country proud.
Elena Koulichenko, just 22 years old, almost snagged a bronze in the women’s high jump. She cleared 1.95 meters but ended up in a stellar seventh place, which is the highest finish ever for a Cypriot female athlete in this event. Not too shabby!
Olivia Fotopoulou had a double whammy at the Games, running in both the 100m and 200m sprints. Her 100m time of 11.50 seconds wasn’t her best, but she shined in the 200m. She made it to the semi-finals and finished 23rd overall, putting her in the top eight among European sprinters. Running two races under 23 seconds in just eight hours is no easy feat!
Milan Trajkovic brought his A-game to the 110m hurdles, landing an impressive ninth place. Even though he missed out on the finals, his performance was a highlight for Cyprus and showcased his talent.
Eleni Tymviou, the team leader, couldn’t be happier with how the athletes performed. She praised their coaches and expressed confidence in their future successes. "We’re thrilled with their results and excited about what’s next," Tymviou said.
COEAS President Pericles Markaris also joined in the celebration. He praised Koulichenko for her near-podium finish, Trajkovic for his top performance, and Fotopoulou for proving she’s among the world’s best sprinters. “These athletes have written a golden chapter in our Olympic history,” Markaris declared.
