Cyprus climbs UEFA rankings as Pafos FC shines

President Christodoulides celebrates Pafos FC’s triumph

Newsroom

Cyprus has made significant progress in the UEFA rankings, moving up to 19th place after Pafos FC’s qualification for the next stage of European competition. The nation was the only one to improve its ranking, surpassing Croatia in the standings.

While APOEL’s elimination meant Cyprus could not have two teams in European tournaments, Pafos FC remains the country’s hope. Their next challenge in the UEFA Conference League Round of 16 could see them face either Lugano or Djurgårdens—teams that are not considered overwhelming favorites.

Cyprus now sits within the 17th–22nd ranking range, which allows the domestic league champion to enter the Champions League Second Qualifying Round, with other top teams securing spots in the Europa and Conference League qualifiers.

Adding to the excitement, President Nikos Christodoulides, a passionate Pafos FC supporter, was present for their historic qualification against Omonia at the Alphamega Stadium. He applauded the team’s victory and personally congratulated the players and staff in the locker room.

The first leg of the Round of 16 is scheduled for March 6, with the return leg on March 13. Cyprus now looks to Pafos FC to continue their European journey and further elevate the country’s football standing.
