Cyprus cranks up the heat: 41°C and climbing

Yellow warning in effect as inland temps scorch, with more sizzling days ahead.

Newsroom

Good morning, Cyprus. I hope you slept well, because your air conditioning probably didn’t. It’s Tuesday, and the island is officially roasting. The Meteorology Department has issued a yellow heat warning from 12:00 to 17:00, as inland temperatures are set to hit a sweltering 41°C.

That’s not a typo.

If you're by the coast, consider yourself slightly luckier, with highs around 35°C, while the mountains will see a relatively cooler but still toasty 33°C.

The skies today will be mostly clear, but don’t be surprised if a few cheeky clouds gather over the mountains in the afternoon, possibly bringing isolated rain. Not enough to dance in, but maybe enough to confuse your car’s windshield sensors.

Winds will start off mild and all over the place, then settle into a southwest to northwest flow at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be a little rough, so if you’re diving in for relief, expect a bit of a splash.

Tonight, the weather stays mostly calm and clear. Winds will ease to a gentle 3 Beaufort from the northwest, and the sea will mellow out. It’s a decent night to sit outdoors; just avoid anything metal that’s been in the sun.

As for the rest of the week? Expect more of the same, but hotter. Wednesday through Friday will be sunny and especially warm, with temps expected to climb even higher by Thursday and hold steady above normal through the weekend.

In short: drink water like it’s your job, go easy on outdoor errands, and maybe hold off on baking; your front yard is already doing that for you.
