Cyprus is dangling a big incentive to boost enlistment in the National Guard: a 50% tuition discount at private universities for women who serve.

Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said Friday the move aims to encourage women aged 18 to 26 to enlist, stressing that the Guard’s needs are “ongoing and permanent.”

Women who sign up will also have the option to later join the ranks of professional soldiers, known as SYOP. Palmas said the tuition deal applies for the entire duration of studies, calling it a benefit that extends well beyond military service.

“This is not just about serving the country, it’s about opening doors for the future,” he said on state radio.
