Newsroom

Today, Cyprus marked a significant step forward in its environmental efforts with the signing of a contract for the supply and installation of 50 prefabricated Green Kiosks across its mountainous and remote regions.

According to an announcement from the Department of Environment, the contract was signed between the Department and the project contractor, in the presence of the General Directorate of Development, as it represents a milestone in Cyprus's Recovery and Resilience Plan for 2021-2026.

These Green Kiosks will accept paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, and specialized streams, with the potential to include easily reusable materials.

"The contract will run for twenty-five (25) months with a value of €3,274,000 excluding VAT," the announcement stated.

The Green Kiosks will be installed in fifty (50) remote and mountainous local authorities across all provinces of Cyprus. Specifically, eight communities in Nicosia Province, 16 in Paphos Province, 14 in Limassol Province, ten communities and one municipality in Larnaca Province, and one community in Famagusta Province. Installation is expected to be completed by the first half of 2026.

A Green Kiosk functions as a small Recycling Material Sorting Center, housed in a modified shipping container, accepting separated recyclable materials from citizens.

The goal of the Green Kiosk is to record the quality and quantity of incoming materials, achieve detailed sorting and recovery of high-quality, high-value materials, and provide a human-centered approach with on-site personnel.

Additionally, the Green Kiosk will accept clothing, footwear, toys, CDs, and books without any processing required. Specialized streams include edible fats and oils (cooking oils), light bulbs, small electrical and electronic devices, as well as household batteries.

These Green Kiosks are part of the LIFE IP CYzero WASTE- LIFE20/IPE/CY/000011 project, "Smart Monitoring and Effective Waste Reduction in Cyprus." The design of the Green Kiosk is an original unit from the National Technical University of Athens, as a partner of the project, successfully implemented in remote areas and islands in Greece.
