UPDATE:

Escaped Convict Captured in Larnaca

The 49-year-old man who escaped from a private clinic in Larnaca while under guard has been captured. Following a coordinated operation by Larnaca Police, M.M.A.D., and Y.D.A.P., he was found around 2 p.m. on the fifth floor of a construction site in central Larnaca.

He will appear in court tomorrow for a detention order related to his escape and is set to return to court on December 30 for the continuation of his extradition proceedings to Sweden.

The man had escaped after detaching a bar from his bed, despite being handcuffed, and climbing out of a window. He had been hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis and chest pain before his escape.

Authorities are actively searching for a 49-year-old Swedish man who escaped from a private clinic in Larnaca, where he had been under custody. The man, Hans Jonny Uven, was being treated for acute gastroenteritis and chest pain while awaiting extradition to Sweden, where he faces charges related to financial crimes committed between 2021 and 2024.

The escape occurred yesterday afternoon, with Uven reportedly managing to break free despite being handcuffed. According to police sources, he detached a metal part of the bed he was restrained to and escaped through the room’s window. The man was scheduled to appear before Larnaca District Court today.

In the wake of the incident, Cyprus’ Chief of Police, Themistoklis Arnaoutis, has ordered a disciplinary investigation into the handling of Uven’s detention. Sources indicate that the police officer involved, a contract special constable, has been placed on temporary suspension, and further scrutiny is underway regarding how this officer was assigned the task.

Uven had been under arrest since December 6, following his capture at Larnaca Airport under a European arrest warrant issued by Swedish authorities. Now, as the search for him intensifies, questions surrounding the circumstances of his escape and the level of security at the clinic continue to be investigated.
