Police have arrested Doros Theofanous, a 42-year-old convict serving a life sentence, who escaped from legal custody on September 26. Known as the "hairdresser," Theofanous was captured on Sunday afternoon in the coastal area of Limassol after a three-day manhunt.
According to Limassol Police Director Andreas Angelides, the arrest was made following a tip-off that a man matching Theofanous' description was seen walking in the Amathus beach area. A coordinated operation by local police units led to his apprehension.
Theofanous, who had been on a temporary release to visit his parents in Choletria, Paphos, escaped through a window of their home while under the supervision of prison guards and police. He had been granted permission to visit with 23 relatives, but at approximately 12:05 p.m. on Thursday, he fled in an unknown direction, prompting an immediate manhunt.
"After a search, nothing illegal was found in his possession," police spokesman Christos Andreou said, adding that Theofanous will appear before the Paphos District Court on Monday.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his escape, including his movements during the time he was on the run and whether others assisted him. A 26-year-old man remains in custody in connection with the case, while three other suspects have been released.
The seven officers responsible for supervising Theofanous during his temporary release have been suspended pending an internal investigation.
This marks the second time Theofanous has escaped from custody, raising concerns over the handling of his supervised release.
