Tension remains high in the divided capital as the trial of five Greek Cypriots accused of illegally entering a military zone in the Turkish-occupied north was postponed Thursday to August 21. The defendants all pleaded not guilty, leaving the “military court” no choice but to delay proceedings.
The postponement gives the defense time to review the case file, which until now had been withheld by the “prosecuting authority.” The court also ordered that three of the detainees receive medical examinations amid concerns about their health while in custody.
The charges stem from an incident in a restricted military area, a sensitive flashpoint in the already tense divide between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The “judge” stressed that the delay would not significantly slow the trial, but both sides now have extra time to prepare.
The five remain in custody as the case moves toward the next hearing, highlighting the ongoing friction in the north and the legal and political challenges facing Greek Cypriots under Turkish Cypriot jurisdiction.
