Seventeen wild birds were released back into their natural habitat after police uncovered an illegal trapping operation in Larnaca district on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out by members of the Anti-Poaching Unit of the Mobile Rapid Response Unit (MMAD) as part of ongoing efforts to tackle illegal bird trapping.
Officers searched an area where hunting is prohibited and discovered five nets that had been set up to catch wild birds. They also found an electronic device that was being used to imitate bird calls, a technique commonly associated with the illegal trapping of migratory birds.
The 17 birds found caught in the nets were alive and were subsequently released.
Police investigations identified a 36-year-old man as the person managing the site. According to authorities, the man admitted to offences being investigated when questioned by officers.
The Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation.
