Cyprus' pharmacists are warning consumers about the potential dangers of purchasing unapproved or illegally distributed pharmaceutical products online and through other unauthorized channels.
The Pancyprian Pharmaceutical Association said it fully supports a recent warning issued by the Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health and stressed that patient and consumer safety must remain the primary consideration when purchasing medicines and health-related products.
Products advertised online as natural, innovative or free from side effects are not necessarily safe or legal, the association said. The same applies to products marketed as dietary supplements or labeled as being intended solely for research purposes.
Unregulated websites, social media platforms and unlicensed sellers can offer products whose safety, origin and contents may be difficult for consumers to verify.
The association urged the public to be particularly cautious of products promising rapid weight loss, anti-aging effects, muscle growth, an improved appearance or better health when those claims are unsupported by scientific evidence.
Consumers were also advised to obtain medicines only from licensed pharmacies and other authorized, regulated sources. Before using medicines or products that may contain active pharmaceutical ingredients, people should consult a doctor or pharmacist, the association said.
It added that professional advice can also help consumers make informed choices about dietary supplements, cosmetics and other personal care products.
Pharmacists play a role that extends beyond dispensing medication, according to the association. They can advise patients on the appropriate use of medicines, identify potential risks and interactions, and provide scientifically based guidance.
The association described licensed pharmacies as safe and regulated places where the public can obtain medicines and professional pharmaceutical advice.
