Nicosia goes quiet as residents flee the August heat

With service centers closed and no municipal events planned, the capital offers just a swimming pool oasis for those sticking around.

As is well known, every year, the closer we get to August 15, the fewer people remain in Nicosia. Residents use their holiday time to get as far away as possible from the city’s sweltering heat, which can be particularly unbearable these days. As a result, Nicosia “empties out,” showing only faint signs of life, sometimes even faintly reminiscent of a scene from an American Western. So, what’s left for those who stay behind? The answer: not much. Kathimerini spoke with the Nicosia Municipality press office, which outlined what will remain closed on August 15 and what will stay open.

Service Centers reopen Monday

The two Nicosia Municipality service centers set up to assist residents during heatwaves will remain closed on August 15 and will reopen on Monday, August 18. Operating hours will remain the same, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The centers are:

  • Nicosia Multipurpose Municipal Center, near Famagusta Gate, 40 Nikiforou Foka Street (Tel.: 22797850)
  • Agios Dometios–Engomi Multipurpose Municipal Center, 22 Laerti Street, Agios Dometios

During their operation, the centers are staffed, air-conditioned, and offer cool drinks.

Swimming pool stays open

Residents remaining in the capital who want to cool off outside of an air-conditioned space can visit the city’s “little oasis,” the Nicosia Municipal Swimming Pool, which will remain open. The pool will operate on its regular schedule, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information, residents can call 22797646 or the municipality at 22797000.

No events over the long weekend

According to the Nicosia Municipality press office, no municipal events will take place over the long weekend. The obvious reason is that a large number of residents leave the city for holidays, making the organization of events unnecessary.
