The Department of Road Transport, under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, has announced an extension for renewing vehicle road tax licenses for 2026. The new deadline is 31 March 2026, giving motorists additional time to complete the process without paying a penalty.
The extension follows the publication of an amendment to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law in the Republic’s Official Gazette. Authorities say the measure ensures that drivers who have not yet renewed their vehicle registration can do so without incurring late fees during the extended period.
Drivers who renew their licenses after 31 March 2026 will face additional charges. The penalty will include a fixed fee of €10 plus 10% of the road tax amount owed for the current year.
Officials also addressed drivers who may have already paid a surcharge. Vehicle owners who renewed their road tax after 11 March 2026 but before the legislative change was announced will receive refunds of the extra charge. These reimbursements will be processed according to the procedures of the Treasury of the Republic.
