Police intervened in a wave of overnight disturbances across Limassol, Nicosia, and Larnaca on December 13, as fires, vandalism, and attacks on officers led to multiple arrests and ongoing investigations.
The incidents unfolded on a date that authorities have repeatedly linked to recurring outbreaks of disorder connected to the “ACAB/1312” slogan. While December 13 is not tied to any official anniversary or organized movement, it has, in recent years, become an informal focal point for groups of mostly young people engaging in acts of vandalism and confrontation with police.
Despite advance warnings and heightened police readiness, unlawful gatherings were reported in several areas on Sunday night. According to police, those involved caused malicious damage and targeted officers by throwing stones, firecrackers, and improvised explosive devices.
Seven people were arrested in connection with the incidents. In Limassol, police detained four minors and one 18-year-old, while two adults were arrested in Larnaca. The minors are being investigated for a series of serious offenses, including conspiracy to commit criminal acts, rioting, disturbance of the peace, malicious damage, possession of offensive weapons, and verbally abusing police officers. A separate investigation involving the two adults concerns alleged possession of narcotic substances.
During the same night, authorities recorded multiple cases of arson and vandalism, including fires set to rubbish bins, tires, a kiosk, and dry vegetation. Three police patrol vehicles were also damaged after being struck by stones.
Police had cautioned ahead of December 13 that participation in such acts carries serious legal consequences, particularly for minors and their families. Officials have repeatedly stressed that these incidents are not protests but episodes of unstructured violence that endanger public safety and property.
Investigations into all incidents remain ongoing.
