Around 4,500 people receiving Cyprus' Mobility Allowance will see higher monthly payments from July, with the revised amounts due to reach their bank accounts on 29 July together with back payments dating to the beginning of the year.
The Department for the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, under the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, announced that the monthly allowance has increased by 33 per cent. Depending on eligibility, the payment has risen from €75 to €100 or from €150 to €200.
Recipients will also receive a one-off payment covering the increase from 1 January 2026. The amount will vary according to each person's entitlement, reaching a maximum of €300. The payment reflects either a €25 or €50 monthly increase for the period between January and June, or a shorter qualifying period where applicable.
The Mobility Allowance is available to people with quadriplegia or blindness regardless of age or employment status. It is also provided to people with moderate or severe physical disabilities, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, or severe mental disabilities who are working, studying or attending Day Care Centres. People undergoing haemodialysis treatment and those with thalassaemia who participate in treatment programmes are also eligible.
The Department said that about 600 people over the age of 65 with quadriplegia, who were previously not receiving the allowance, will become eligible from next month.
People with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities or severe mental disabilities who are employed or studying and now qualify for the allowance can already submit applications to the Department.
Those attending Day Care Centres who already receive a transport allowance do not need to apply again. Their increased payment will be transferred in due course from the Welfare Benefits Management Service to the Department for the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
The announcement also confirmed that people joining a Day Care Centre for the first time may submit an application for the Mobility Allowance alongside their application for the new Day Care Centre Participation Grant, which is scheduled to come into effect in September.
