Downpours for some, showers for others as storms cross Cyprus

Rain and strong winds brought hazardous driving conditions, fallen trees and damage in Paphos during Thursday’s yellow weather warning.

Rain swept across Cyprus on Thursday, bringing a soaking to some neighborhoods and lighter showers to others, while strong winds caused damage and kept emergency crews busy.

In Paphos, a metal structure fell from an apartment building onto a parked vehicle on Griva Digeni Avenue. Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou said nobody was inside the vehicle at the time, Kathimerini reported.

Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis reported calls involving fallen trees in Paphos, Nicosia and Larnaca districts. In Miliou, crews responded after branches fell onto Electricity Authority cables.

The unsettled weather also made getting around more difficult. Police reported heavy rain across the Paphos road network around 11:15 a.m., with poor visibility, slippery surfaces and water flowing or collecting on roads. Drivers were urged to slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.

Earlier, thick fog reduced visibility around Agros, Chandria and Kyperounta in the Limassol mountains, adding another challenge for motorists.

The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow warning covering 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, forecasting isolated heavy thunderstorms moving from western Cyprus toward other areas. Rainfall rates could reach 35 to 55 millimeters an hour during storms, with possible hail and wind gusts reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort. Those figures describe the warning’s forecast intensity, rather than measured rainfall everywhere.

Conditions were expected to ease gradually late in the afternoon, although isolated showers could linger overnight, particularly along the coast and in western and northern areas.

The umbrella may still come in handy over the weekend. Isolated showers remain possible Friday and Saturday, with a chance of thunderstorms Sunday, while temperatures are expected to edge back toward seasonal averages.
