Newsroom

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale rattled parts of Cyprus late Thursday night, giving many residents a brief jolt.

According to the Department of Geological Survey, the quake struck at 10:53 p.m. local time on December 5. Its epicenter was located in the sea, about 45 kilometers southeast of Larnaca, at a depth of 20 kilometers beneath the surface.

The tremor was most strongly felt in the Larnaca district, but reports suggest that the quake’s vibrations were perceptible across the island.

While the earthquake caused no damage or injuries, it was enough to remind residents of the island’s seismic activity. Authorities at the Geological Survey Department confirmed they are keeping a close eye on the situation.

The department has published detailed information about the event, including seismic data and interactive maps, on its website at www.gsd-seismology.org.cy.

This latest earthquake is a gentle reminder of nature’s unpredictability. For now, authorities assure the public that there’s no immediate cause for concern.
