A remarkable incident unfolded in Attica when a 69-year-old man accidentally threw away €20,000 in a recycling bin. The money, which he had been keeping at home to pay renovation workers, was discovered by a businessman who quickly alerted the authorities.
The story had a positive outcome for the elderly man. A local businessman found the money in a box originally used for modem packaging and immediately contacted the police. Officers from the Northeastern Attica Subdirectorate for Crime Investigation and Resolution responded promptly, reviewing CCTV footage to track down the rightful owner.
The elderly man, who had mistakenly placed the box with other recycling items, later explained that the money was intended to pay the workers on his property. The police were able to locate and inform him of the discovery.
The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) publicly praised the businessman’s honesty in a social media post, commending his swift action. The post read:
"What would you do if you found €20,000 in a recycling bin? A deputy manager at a technology store is worthy of praise after finding a modem packaging box in an electronics recycling bin, containing €20,000, and immediately informing the police."
