An elderly woman told police that strangers stole her gold valuables and jewelry after convincing her over the phone to place the valuables outside her home.
The woman reported that around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, she received a call from an unknown woman claiming the government was offering free domestic helpers for elderly residents and requesting personal details to process an application.
The caller then connected her to a man who claimed to be from the Electricity Authority, warning that her home had a leak and was at risk of catching fire.
Police said the man instructed the woman to take her money and gold valuables outside. While still on the phone, she placed her jewelry in a basket and left it on her veranda. He then told her to return inside and turn off the main switch. When she went back to the veranda, the basket and its contents were gone.
Witness statements indicate an unknown man left the scene on foot in an unknown direction.
The Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation. Authorities once again urge citizens to remain vigilant, noting that scammers frequently devise new schemes to steal property.
