Erhürman says no formal Cyprus plan exists

Turkish Cypriot leader calls recent diplomatic developments a collection of ideas rather than a structured blueprint.

Diplomatic activity surrounding the Cyprus issue is set to increase this month, following the conclusion of parliamentary elections and the end of the Republic of Cyprus's term heading the Council of the European Union.

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman stated on social media that he anticipated this shift months ago. While expressing support for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Erhürman clarified that no formal blueprint for a settlement exists at present, describing the current diplomatic landscape as a collection of ideas rather than a structured plan. He added that recent events confirm this reality to anyone who previously doubted it. Erhürman has briefed political groups, trade unions, youth bodies, and business leaders, promising regular updates to the public while urging calm.

The situation has drawn varied responses from other Turkish Cypriot political figures. Ersin Tatar, the former leader of the community, criticized a recent written statement by María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. Tatar argued that Holguín’s mandate is limited to identifying whether common ground exists between the two sides, rather than introducing new solution models or proposals.

Pointing to the 2025 UN Secretary-General's report, Tatar maintained that the documented lack of common ground stems from the refusal by Greek Cypriots to grant equal international status and sovereign equality to the Turkish Cypriot community. Backed by Turkey, Tatar reiterated his stance that any future cooperation must occur between "two distinct states".

Concurrently, Ziya Öztürkler, who serves as the "speaker" of the so-called parliament in the occupied areas, pointed to alleged actions by Greek Cypriot authorities regarding territorial concessions and NATO-related security frameworks. Öztürkler stated firmly that no land would be relinquished.
