Two separate crimes targeting women in their 80s are under police investigation after one victim was tricked out of more than €127,000 through an online scam and another had €45,000 worth of property stolen during a burglary.

The first case concerns an 83-year-old woman who reported that she received a phone call from a number linked to another European country. The caller claimed to represent an online financial payments platform and convinced her to provide details linked to her bank account. She later discovered that more than €127,000 had been taken from her account.

The Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia CID is investigating the suspected fraud. Police are reminding the public never to share banking information, personal data or access to electronic devices with anyone claiming to offer financial or technical assistance. They also urge people to verify unexpected calls and messages by contacting organisations through their official communication channels.

In a separate case in Limassol, police have arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with the burglary of an 89-year-old woman's home.

According to investigators, the break-in took place during the morning of June 26, when an intruder entered the house and stole property valued at around €45,000. Evidence gathered during the investigation led officers to the suspect, who was arrested under a court warrant.

The 46-year-old appeared before the Limassol District Court on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody for five days while detectives continue their investigation.
