A 63-year-old man is in custody after police discovered a significant stash of cannabis, hunting ammunition, and cash during a multi-stage operation on Wednesday afternoon. While the suspect was initially stopped on the road, the bulk of the drugs were found carefully hidden inside a metal dog cage on his property.
The operation began when officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) intercepted the suspect’s vehicle on the road connecting Zygi and Mari. A search of the car revealed roughly 500 grams of cannabis, leading to the driver's immediate arrest.
Investigators then turned their attention to a plot of farmland and buildings the man owns in the Zygi area. During a detailed search of the premises, officers discovered three nylon packages containing an additional 1.5 kilograms of cannabis. The packages had been intentionally concealed inside a metal dog cage.
A subsequent search of the man's home, conducted with his written consent, uncovered 339 hunting rifle cartridges.
Police also seized 743 euros in cash to determine if the money came from illegal drug sales, along with two mobile phones that will undergo forensic analysis.
The Larnaca branch of YKAN is leading the ongoing investigation.
