European Commission names new Head of Representation in Nicosia

Panayiotis Pourgourides to represent European Commission under von der Leyen in Nicosia.

Press Release

The European Commission on Wednesday appointed Panayiotis Pourgourides as the new head of its Representation in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Pourgourides, a Cypriot national, will serve as the Commission’s official representative in Cyprus under the political authority of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The date his appointment takes effect has not yet been announced.

With a background in international relations, Pourgourides has held several roles in both European affairs and national politics. His experience includes work in strategic planning, policy coordination, diplomacy and stakeholder engagement, according to the Commission.

Most recently, he served as a member of the cabinet of European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides. He previously worked in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and as secretary of the Cyprus parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Commission said Pourgourides’ knowledge of European institutions and ability to navigate complex communication environments make him well suited to lead its work in Cyprus.
