Firefighters were called Saturday to contain a blaze that erupted in a large pile of waste near the Kosi landfill, authorities said.
Three fire engines were dispatched to the site, Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said. An Environment Department officer also responded to monitor the situation.
With a forested area nearby, the Forestry Department placed three additional engines on standby in case the flames spread.
Excavators and trucks operated by the landfill’s management are working to smother the burning mounds with soil. Officials cautioned that the effort is expected to take significant time before the fire is fully extinguished.
